Brasserie Beck report

DCDOLL | Feb 23, 200807:42 AM

Finally went to BB last night. Went over to our fave wine bar (well one of our faves!) Veritas in dupont for wine & cheese first. Then drove over to BB; valets were at the ready and the cost is reasonable to park, $7. The bar was crazy, which i expected, but we were ready to sit down anyway. They put us in a little cramped area near the bar, but by the window so i thought, that's ok. I pulled the curtain about halfway open so i could look out and then not 5 min later, some management type guy came over and leaned OVER me and said "is it ok if i close this?" and i was like "Well, i did open it so i could look out" and he completely ignored what i said and was like "Oh thank you, this is one of the chef's big pet peeves!" i was like WHAT???????? He walked away and i looked at my husband and i said "SILLY ME, i thought i was the customer!!" So that put me in a bad frame of mind right away. Fortunately though the waiter was great. He got me back in a good mood. We ordered a nice bottle of zin and then he said he would bring us little samples of beer w/ each course so we could taste what they have for next time. Hubby ordered shrimp croquettes for an app, i didn't order anything since we had just had cheese, but the waiter brought me a nice plate of greens & some little crostinis with rabbit pate. Also the bread is to die for...very french w/ nice butter. He brought some yummy beer samples w/ those. Then i had the chicken waterzooi for my entree (they didnt have monkfish anymore which disappointed me) and hubby had some sort of sliced steak and frites which he said was like prime rib. Both were good. Waiter brought us 4 more little beer samples with the entrees. Then for dessert hubby had belgian bread pudding which had dried cherries in it and some kind of yummy sauce, very nice. I had panna cotta which was strange. Waiter siad they had 'experimented' with it that day and put peanut butter and bananas in it. I told him they should call it Elvis-cotta. Anyway it was not great. Fruit on top was good though. We had yet more beer samples w/ dessert.
All in all it was a very nice meal but next time i would ask to be put further back away from the bar. Going to the bathroom required a gauntlet thru the bar area that was quite challenging!! I may email them about the rudeness of their manager (or whoever he was) leaning over me to close the curtain and using it as the chef's pet peeve, which i thought was extremely customer UNfocused, but it wouldn't keep me from going back. Car was actually waiting for us and heated up when we came out which was really nice (last place they did that for us was 1789).
Much better experience than the other hot new place, Central which i won't ever return to. Enjoy!
