We clamored for counter space like college kids waiting for U2 tickets. Suddenly, Michele Myers emerged with a glistening chocolate dome adorned with chocolate and pistachio colored fins. A bowling ball, someone gasped. No. A Parisian hat, another commented. A young lady next to me, on the cell phone with her boss, whispered, "They're almost out of macaroons! They have apple, rose and pumpkin left." Pause. "A half dozen of each? Okay." Mine was a simpler order: a croissant for $3.25, which I've not yet tried, a Madeleine for $2, which I gave to a friend, and the pumpkin macaroon for $1.25, which I downed a little after midnight. So good. What a sweet way to begin the new year.
