Boston's Fish House - New Smyrna Beach - Report

Chuck | Nov 18, 200401:58 PM

Had to choose between Boston's and JB's Fish Camp - Boston's was closer to the reason i'd come to New Smyrna and so it was Boston's.

The place looks a lot bigger on the outside than inside; I mention this for a reason I'll get to shortly. Anyway, you are greeted at the door and their systelm is quickly explained...You raed their hand held menu, proceed to the counter, order your meal, pay your tab, and then go back to a holding area and wait to be called to a table.

I tried to figure out the reasons for their fairly unusual system. Unusual, only in that you normally would sit down and then place your order. I got called quickly after going to the holding pen.

But, once seated, it took a while to first get my drink and then my order. I chose their Maine popcorn shrimp with two sides for $6.95. I got the slaw and fried. First mistake...get their homemade onion rings instead of the frozen fries.

I watched lots of things coming out of the kitchen while I awaited my meal. Everything looked great...especially their NE Clam Chowder. Their coctail sauce was very, very good. The tarter sauce was correctly brought to the table with your meal..otherwise it was kept on ice behind the service counter.

My food was very, very good. The shrimp had the same batter as their fried clams. I know that becauise a few got onto my plate with the shrimp. Next time, i'd get the clams. The slaw was ice cold and very good. It was all very good.

Three times while I ate, I was asked if I needed a refill on my soda. Good service for sure. But, as soon as I put my pastic fork down, my plate was swiped out from under me. I kid you not. Not good service.

Now I understand the place is small and they had lots of people waiting so....But, here's the rub IMHO.
I say its great for lunch, when most people are not looking to linger. But, for dinner, I highly, highly suggest you go elsewhere unless you are looking for a very, very swift dining experience. I could not even imaging taking my wife and another couple out to dinner here...A wait in the holding area, a wait at the table and a rush to move you on out of there!

In comparing the place with what up to now is the best seafood place we've been to in the area, Betty's AIA, I'd say quality wise they are on a par; prices, too. But, the dining experience at Betty's AIA is far, far superior. At Betty's (far from fancy) there's a sit-down bar, much larger dining area(s), you'll face the Atlantic Ocean, and nobody is rushing you to leave. Their menu is more varied and they offer dessert, etc.

Thanks to the Hound who recommended Boston. The food was very good...just like you said! I'm there again...for lunch.

One question regarding JB's Fish Camp. Is it one of these old type places where it's all wood (sort of like a BBQ place) with screens and no air conditioning...just fans? I believe I was at a Fish Camp and it was set back in a rural neighborhood. Just not sure if it was this place.
