Boston hounds ask: Where to chow near Penn Ave & 6th, NW?

Greetings, DC Hounds- My hubby and I will be in town for the Nationals home opener, staying with family right on the Mall, just 2 blocks away from the MCI Center and basically at the intersection of Pennsylvania Ave and 6th, NW. I admit to being woefully disoriented whenever I visit DC, mostly because I leave the organizing and transportation guidance to my inlaws. However, hubby and I are hoping to strike out on our own this Friday night for dinner while in DC, and would like to have a tasty, nice but not too fussy dinner.

We lean towards Asian, Italian, Mexican and hearty/creative American when in Boston. We tend to lean away from Ethiopian, French, and steakhouses. My husband prefers a place with good-sized portions, and wine list is not terribly important as we do not drink much.

I've been to Ten Penh with friends and enjoyed it very much. I would say that any place fancier than that is probably out of our range on this trip. We will not have a car, but are comfortable on the Metro.

So........any ideas? Thanks so much in advance.
