Boston Globe critic looks to be getting more Chowish

The often-Chowhound-maligned Devra First of the Boston Globe appears to be on something of a roll with this week's review, which covers all six of Boston's shabu-shabu palaces: www.boston.com/ae/food/restaurants/ar...

I think this represents another in a string of reviews that appear focused on more Chowish places than the Globe's traditional use of its primary restaurant critic to review white-tablecloth establishments. I think the trend started with a review that shocked many of us a few weeks back, when she was allowed to review the Boston-Hound-beloved Angela's Cafe, a superb but quite modest Mexican joint located off the beaten track in residential East Boston. Her writing seems to be getting sharper, too -- this piece includes a nice litle shabu primer. I hope the Globe lets First continue along this path.
