This outpost from the same owners as the former Harvard Sq place of the same name, among others, has opened at 184 Cambridge St., replacing The Mughals after less than 1-1/2 yrs. Only two other tables were occupied when I dined solo there this evening, so I overheard the owner chatting with a business associate. He said that their chef was formerly at The Pongal. They closed the Harv Sq location after 25 successful years because the rent was raised to $33,000. Yup, that's what he said.
Service was quite slow, pricing a little high, I thought, on the vegetarian offerings. All I had was a tasty Malai Kofta, which is essentially 4 falafel balls the size of Dunkin munchkins, in a cream gravy which includes nuts. It came with plain basmati rice; bread (which I did not order) was extra, as it often is in Indian places. At $14, it was the same price as most of the chicken entrees. Most of the lamb dishes are $15, the mutton $17.
