It looks like we may be spending several days in Bologna in late April, and are eagerly looking forward to this first visit. We will be public transportation/foot transport dependent (no car). Of course I have read the prior discussions of the city and know something about the cuisine. What I am wondering is whether I should be looking for anything special seasonally, and second, whether there are restaurants that are particularly good at antipasti, secondi and vegetables/contorni since I am trying hard to limit my carb consumption to tastes. In terms of types of meals we are not looking for either luxe or cheap unless the best dishes are found in someplace luxe or cheap - we do understand the tradeoffs.

If there is a non-obvious outing into the countryside that is doable, that might be attractive. Id read about Osteria Numero Sette in Rastignano, for example, and have wanted to visit Osteria di Rubbiara for years but Im not sure either would be worth the effort.

We will be considering day trips to Ravenna, and maybe Modena (we have visited both before) so good new reccs there would be helpful as well.

We usually do our dining at lunch and camp in our apartment at dinnertime. Not sure where that apartment will be - it would be nice to know where the best markets for fruit vegetable cheese meat fish and fish are because we will be ranging all over the city center at least and thus potentially shopping all through the day. The "slowfood" Mercati della Terra seems a little off center for my purposes..

thanks for any suggestions!!!!
