A few months ago I purchased Gum Jum (golden needles or dried daylily buds) from Bohemian Well Being Town at the Saturdan morning Santa Rosa Farmers Market at the Vets Building. This mushroom specialist grows the flowers in Occidental (West Sonoma County) and dries them himself. A small baggie was $4.
This week I finally had a chance to use them to make Lo Han Jai (Buddhist monk vegetarian stew) for the Chinese New Year holiday. The gum jum are a bit lighter in color, a pale golden yellow, than the rustier-hued imported ones. They were still a bit pliable and rehydrated quickly in some warm water. The small flower petals bloomed and the buds were very clean with no dirt or sand leaving a trace in the soaking water. Very high quality, all were long enough to tie in the traditional knot with no stubs. And they taste great with a clean and bright citrusy tang.
