For lunch on Monday I happened upon the newly opened "Blue Fin" at the corner of Broadway and 47th Street. The restaurant gives the appearance of a wine bar from the outside; once past the entry area (which does service primarily as a wine bar), one first encounters a moderate sized room with a sweeping staircase at left that climbs to a second seating area complete with a bar. Beneath the staircase in the main floor dining room is a sushi bar. I sampled a couple of the sushi rolls (the toro with scallions was fresh and tasty); for a main dish I ordered the Mediterranean seafood salad, a nicely arranged plate including squid, shrimp and scallops. Unfortunately, the fish was all rather tastelss - in fact, the saltiness of the black olive slices overpowered all the other flavors of the ingredients. In the end, while the setting and food (and many among the clientele) were a pleasure to look at, the food left much to be desired.
I'd be interested to learn if anyone else has sampled the fare yet at Blue Fin. My understanding is that they've only been open for three weeks. The fact is, a restaurant that serves decent sushi and other interesting, albeit mediocre, fare is a welcome addition to this taste-deprived part of town.
