Arrived 8 pm. 50 minute wait for a table. Found the last open spot at the bar. Bartender was seriously overwhelmed with having to serve a full bar of patrons. They ran out of pint glasses at 8:15 and were serving Guiness in those squat, octogonal glasses usually reserved for water or Hoegaarden.
Bag of "Dirty" brand BBQ potato chips periodically unveiled from under the bar and unceremoniously emptied into communal chip bowls on bar, little crumblies at the end of the bag included.
Around 8:20, bartender claims that CO2 is malfunctioning while it appears that beer is flowing fine. It becomes apparent that cracking open a bottle of Stella takes less time then filling a pint (in a water glass) and this might be the impetus for claiming the alleged CO2 malfunction.
After being seated, we order Buffalo wings (they also offer BBQ).
The wings are very meaty, and as other 'hounds have accurately reported, they are of the breaded variety. Presented with the de rigeur plastic cup of blue cheese, which had a crumble of blue cheese bobbing around the top. The sauce itself tasted off -- almost as if there was a heavy amount of sour cream in the mix.
It bears noting that the wings were presented lukewarm (and arrived alarmingly quick -- cooked in advance?)
The BLT Burger -- it's a double patty situation. Comes with bacon and "green peppercorn sauce." Added Vermont cheddar. Arrives medium rare as ordered, and in the first bite, meat flavors are overwhelmed by an assertively smoky bacon. Cheese is high quality cheddar, but still in the latticework form of grated strands, having not had adequate time to melt atop the burger.
Fries (sweet potato and waffle were sampled) arrive cold. Hostess pops by and offers a perfunctory "how's everything" delivered with veteran aplomb at a moment when all three people in our party had full mouths. Cold fries are reported once we had chewed our bites. New ones ordered.
Waffle fries are frozen, sub-Ore-Ida in quality, and ultimately are the chief motivation for post meal Pepcid tablets at the nearest bodega.
Burger was not drippy and juicy, a la Donovan's, Shack, Bistro (on a good night), Burger Joint, or even newcomer Royale. Moreover, much has been made of the blend of different types of meat. However, this did not produce a distinctive, high-grade flavor to the patty. It actually produced a rather unremarkable blandness.
Don't think I'll be returning. There are just too many great burgers to enjoy. Blue Smoke has a wonderful burger AND homemade BBQ chips....
