And this blizzard is perfect cooking weather! We've already made a batch of buttermilk blueberry muffins and a cauliflower/ham/gruyere gratin. Later tonight we're going to roast chicken thighs on a bed of brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes. And maybe a red fish curry?
What are you all cooking?
Blizzards are the best time to dine out. No lines! Great meal at Blue Ribbon a long time ago when it otherwise would have a monster wait.
Here in NJ, probably a foot of snow on ground. I stopped at Shop Rite on way home from school yesterday just to pick up some "fun food". Not planning on needing "survival" grub... longest time EVER snowed-in has been 36 hours, so know I'm not starving.
Cabbage rolls (think I probably asked for advice already??) have evolved/devolved into a soup... less work with same ingredients. It's perking on stove top.
Have a nice hunka salmon in fridge and a whole turkey breast (thawing in bucket of room temp water) just waiting for some heat. Will probably hold off on turkey till storm is petering out sometime tomorrow. Don't want to have a half cooked bird and have power go out... assuming gave oven would shut down?? I know I can still use stove top. Bet there's a way to manually fire up oven, but don't wanna go there.
Just hanging out, cooking & eating!
I am in Florida so its not as cold as you northerners but its cold for us. Its been in the 50's and low 60's during the day. I know i cant complain but i'm really cold. so here is what I have been cooking.

I've got a lamb tagine in the slow cooker right now, to be served over couscous later.
Afternoon snack of baguette, stinky cheese, and a roasted marrow bone.
Some friends are coming over as it look like we will barely get anything, latest forecast is 10-12 inches. I am making a daisy ham, biscuits and Sichuan green beans. Assorted mustards on the side. Starters to nibble over cocktails are a homemade batch of roasted carrot hummus, toasted pita chip and some spicy nuts.
Started off the storm last night with a pot of vegetable soup – mirepoix, chicken stock, potatoes, carrots, spinach, cauliflower simmered until the vegetables were cooked and then blitzed with an immersion blender until creamy. Added a touch of heavy cream to serve and brown bread and butter on the side. Enjoyed while doing a re-watch of the first 3 episodes of BBC’s River – my nom for best tv series of 2015.
For brunch today I made black bean, corn and Colby jack quesadillas with shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream. Tonight, a salad with Jacque Pepin’s mother’s favorite dressing followed by steak, roasted green beans and a potato gratin. A re-watch of the last 3 River episodes coming up as long as the power doesn’t go out. We are back in blizzard mode here on Long Island, after several hours of lower winds and snow.
Tomorrow, fresh mozzarella and cherry tomato bruschetta for a mid-morning snack and then a chicken dish TBD.
Good wishes to all and especially to those in flood zones.
Not sure how much snow we got here in NY...I think about 18". Earlier today I made a whole bunch of chocolate chip waffles that I keep in the freezer for my kids. They freeze well and they are easy to toast for a quick breakfast.
For dinner I had taken some thin chicken breast out of the freezer yesterday and decided to make chicken parmesan and pasta. Also had some caesar salad and garlic bread.
And a picture of my driveway and car when I opened the garage at around 5:00. It's now 6 hours later and it hasn't stopped snowing yet.
after a long day of doing nothing but noshing and staring aimlessly out the window, dinner was "breakfast" with toast, sunny side up eggs, and hash browns. Tomorrow's lunch will be our usual snow day meal of tomato soup with alphabet noodles and grilled cheese sandwiches. Dinner will be stew - not sure what kind yet, but that's the only kind of meal we want after a snow weekend.
after traversing Central Park en route to the Met, stopped to warm up at Lexington Candy Shop for an above-par chicken salad sandwich and an egg cream. meanwhile, had some of Faicco's hot sausages simmering in tomato sauce for a hot bowl of pasta for when we returned.
tonight, braised short ribs in a korean-french style kalbi jim / beef bourguignon mix-up. finally getting to use the Le Creuset from Christmas.
Arthur Schwartz's Russian sweet and sour cabbage soup. Brown the meat and then most everything goes into the pot for a few hours. Brown sugar, carrots, lemon juice. Throw in a peeled potato or two during the last 30 minutes, and some raisins. Serve with black bread and a dollop of sour cream. It was excellent......
Puttering around my apt while it dumped snow on us yesterday afternoon i made ottolenghi's version of mujadarra- but i hate frying anything so I carmelized the onions instead and added some chopped cashews to the top for crunch
