Black Sheep at new SF Whole Foods

Joan Kureczka | Feb 6, 2004 03:15 PM

We were very pleasantly surprised to find both one of the Black Sheep brews (Riggwelter, their strong ale -- about 5.7%), as well as Marsden's Pedigree, on the shelf at the new Whole Foods in San Francisco. This is the first time I've heard of any Black Sheep products being imported into the U.S. This is one of our favorite breweries during our mining season in Weardale each summer and we've visited the brewery a few times to pick up supplies.

If you like British beers, Black Sheep is a terrific small brewery in North Yorkshire. The name comes from Paul Theakston's actions when he disagreed with the sale of his family's brewery to one of the big firms -- he opened his own place right across the street and called it Black Sheep. Now if they can only bring in the Four Square Ale my husband will be very happy.

Black Sheep's gift shop used to also be home to one of the most hysterically funny, tasteless pieces of brewery memorabilia ever... called the bonking clock.
