Black Hogg (review) - outstanding dinner!

I had a fantastic dinner at Black Hogg! Excellent food, friendly service, comfy chairs, clean/minimalist decor - a total win, in my book.

-- Bacon Popcorn with Maple Crema - these were amazing. Slightly larger than dice sized chunks of pork goodness, lightly battered in a flour/herb mix and lightly fried. The Maple Crema was the perfect accompaniment. There were about a dozen in the order. I could eat these all night!

-- House Cut Fries - served with ketchup (and dipped in the maple crema from the bacon popcorn) these were devoured in no time. Perfectly crisp, not overdone - tasty goodness!

-- Brussel Sprout Hash - roasted brussels and fingerling potatoes. This was good, but I was not particularly wowed. The sprouts and potatoes were roasted a little too long, for my tastes. The (bacon) vinaigrette, however, was particularly good and was the shining star of the dish.

-- Mushrooms in a Brioche Box - besides the bacon popcorn, this was a dish I was looking forward to very much. It was visually appealing - a huge square of brioche (easily 2 inches high), topped with mushroom goodness. The bread held up very well (with the amount of the sauce) and the flavors were delicious. The mis-step of this dish, IMO, was the salt content - WAY too salty. So much so, it overpowered the mushrooms.

-- Garlic Scallion Green Beans - very tasty, nice notes of garlic and the chopped hazelnuts were a very nice touch, adding depth and additional flavor to this dish. These were outstanding!

-- Buttery Lamb Burger - this was delicious with a beautiful presentation, but did not taste like lamb AT ALL. The blue cheese was lovely and gave depth to each bite, but I was disappointed there was no flavor of lamb.

-- Grilled Wagyu Steak - I had a piece of this and it was a tad chewy. Decent, but nothing that made my eyes roll to the back of my head. I thought it was the least visually appealing of all the dishes (although, it was served with a colorful fruit salad on the side).

-- Pork Belly Tacos - I did not try these, but they were reported as excellent and I would definitely order them on a future visit. Two to an order.

-- Five Leches Bread Pudding - easily one of the best bread puddings I've ever had. The bread was light and thinly layered (vs. in chunks), and drenched with the most decadent sauce and topped with perfect whipped cream (thick and not overly sweet). Do not miss this delicious dessert!

Our group of four was very satisfied and I'd return in a heartbeat. The crew at Black Hogg know what they are doing and are churning out delicious and interesting dishes. The meal was paced well (thank you kitchen!) and service was warm and friendly. I was also impressed with the portion size. Most dishes were big enough to share between 4 people (except for the bread pudding, we ordered two!).

The damage for all of the above plus 2 glasses of wine ($11/each) and a soda was $153 post tax, pre-tip.

There's a valet out front but also plenty of street parking (metered) on Sunset.
