Bizarre Foods/Andrew Zimmermn in San Diego

Slow day of posts on the SD board, so I thought I might talk about an episode of "Bizarre Foods" I saw a few days ago. It is tagged 2012, so I know it's a repeat, BUT it was new to me.

You know how you have stuff on the TV that you kind of listen-to/ignore. This episode stopped me cold. It gave me so much info that I didn't know about before.

This is just a random recap from my admittedly faulty memory bank.

1. Really good story about Catalina Seafood and with its owner and some of the chefs who love the place.

2. San Diego Zoo. Lions get lots of meat and bones, marine animals get sushi quality fish, huge amounts of food measured on scales with menu directions posted on wall. Blah, blah...cute sea lion that does tricks...blah, blah.

3. Tortas Ahogada in Chula vista with Bill Esparza. Score!

4. Aqui es Texcoco in Chula Vista with a visit to the owner's home so he can do the barbacoa the right way in his back yard that he can't sell in his restaurant, i.e., in a pit of fire - a pot lowered down, the meat is arranged in a cage over the pot so the cooked juices drip down, the lid is sealed above and time goes on.

Lamb's head barbacoa with eyeballs anyone? Score!

5. Oasis Farm (Ranch?) with camels. Well, this is a revelation, a former cow/calf is now also a camel ranch. They can't sell the milk, so they use it to make beauty products. Camel milk is non-allergenic, so much better for you...small farmers need support instead of being crushed and forced out of business by the draconian FDA.

The capper was a beach harvest BBQ with a bunch of guys who have been surfing here for many, many years and they took mussels and gooseneck barnacles off the rocks of their beach and then foraged the greens growing next to the bike paths.

It was a great, well-written and edited show and I can't wait to see it again.
