I've had occasion to visit within a few days the fine old pastry standby Bittersweet and the new first-outside-Central-Europe (I think) Julius Meinl coffee shop. Both are very good, and deliver what you expect: great pastries and great coffee, respectively. But there's more. Bittersweet is making some of the finest ice cream in Chicago if my pints of green tea and dulce de leche are any indication. Also, Meinl (the coffee is as good as reported by the NYTimes from what I've had since its Sunday opening, which is more coffee than might be healthy)has a Viennese pastry chef with a nice size kitchen on premises. The baked goods are good.
