I had to be in Truckee over the weekend to evict a renter but found the time to meet with friends for a dinner at a new restaurant. It's called Moody's Bistro, and it's located in the Truckee Hotel on Commercial Row. For those familiar with Truckee, it's in the space formerly occupied by The Passage.
It's been completely remodeled with warm colors and all the forest green and dark woods removed. They also removed one of the dining room walls and really opened up the space.
Truckee has some okay places to eat, but nothing really great...until now. The chef is from Gary Danko in SF, and they do a daily menu that is wonderful. I started with the Wild Mushroom Gnocchi with three different mushrooms and a cream sauce. Light, not gummy and under $10. My friend had the Steak Carpaccio with Steak Tartare and thought the tartare was the best of that dish. Other friend had the Tempura Softshell Crab that was not greasy, just light and delicious. We didn't want to pass on the salads and soups but were worried we'd run out of stomach room so we went on to the salmon on potato cake with green onion aioli and tomato chutney. The best piece of salmon I've eaten since I left the Pacific Northwest. Dessert was Peach Ginger cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream and a caramel sauce. We couldn't stop eating and fought over the last of it. The wine list is quirky and unusual, with more than enough choices to complement the menu and the wine by the glass list is more complete than most I've seen lately.
Service was faultless, even though the restaurant has only been open a couple weeks. To all Chowhounds looking for a place in North Lake Tahoe, or Truckee, you have to go here. No reservations taken except for parties of 6 or more, so get there early. They also serve lunch. Prices are very reasonable, the most expensive entree being $24. I'm just so happy that Truckee finally has a really great place to eat.
