Had a very pleasant dinner at Bistro Annex last night. The dining room is tiny, but reasonably quiet. Four of the nine tables were occupied. In contrast, Watercress was almost empty.

Appetizers were French Onion Soup, and the Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad. The salad (praised in the SF Station article) was okay but ordinary; I was surprised that the black olives were not oil cured, herbed, or anything special. The soup was a solid rendition of the classic recipe.

Entrees were Lasagna with ground beef and herbs, and the Flank Steak Roulade with mashed potatoes. I did not taste the lasagna, but it was reportedly good if a bit heavy. The portion was huge. My oven roasted flank steak was robust yet tender, and nicely sauced. I would order this again if I wasn't so keen to try the Cassoulet as mentioned by Frosty Melon (link below).

Dessert was the weak point of the meal; a perfunctory Chocolate mousse, and an orange creme brulee with good flavor but an odd spongy texture.

Drinks were a split of the Jean Luis Sparkler to start, a glass of some very food friendly Cotes du Rhone with the steak, and little complimentary glasses of Port with dessert.

Total for three courses, two glases of wine and a nice tip was ~$80. It wasn't a perfect meal, but very satisfying and seemed a good value. I'll be happy to return, but next time will skip dessert.
