Birthday dinner ideas, northside

mrbarolo | May 4, 200405:27 PM

This is very general from someone who knows better, but my brain is fatigued.

Birthday dinner for a friend. We'll be a foursome. Looking for something a bit nicer than everyday, but well below a Trio extravaganza. Say roughly $40-$75 per person, inclusive.

Pretty wide open on type and style. We're all a bit Trattoria-ed out. Other than that, we had a marvellous meal together at Silver Seafood in the good old days. Also love Udupi Palace and Mysore Woodlands. (Our friends favor Tiffin, and we politely demur.) We also had a memorably good meal at the long-gone Melange in Plaza del Lago, Wilmette.

So, as I said, we're wide open. We're also wine drinkers. Happy for either a reasonably priced list, or BYO.

Would prefer someplace not too raucous, where adults can have a conversation.

So, what are people really liking these days, from Lincoln Park to Evanston and out to, say, 3000 west?

Is there a chow consensus (hah!) on the new crop of French bistros - Tournesol vs. Sardine vs. Matou vs. Absinthe vs. Marbuzet, etc.? (We're professionally and parentally busy folks, so places that are old favs. to many here, will be brand new to us.)
