Birthday dinner – need chowish, exotic SF/East Bay ethnic

A few months ago my husband & I enjoyed a weekend of ethnic chowing in SF. I was surprised at how tickled he was to explore Islamic Chinese at Old Mandarin, Indian pizza at Golden Gate pizza, carry out dim sum, utensil-free Eritrean and various Eastern European markets. Makes me a little sentimental just to think about it. Sniff. I love living up here in Napa, but the lack of diverse ethnic eateries is sad.

Consequently, for my husband’s birthday, he asked that I find a chowish, unusual, exotic ethnic place in SF or the East Bay where we can have dinner with his two teenagers. He wants an un-stuffy environment where we can relax and have fun stretching our palates on a culinary adventure.

I was mulling over revisiting Old Mandarin or tracking down some other great Chinese food, or exploring the Ethiopian/Eritrean options in Berkeley, or veering towards something Middle Eastern or Brazilian BBQ or ...? Obviously the lack of ethnic choices here in Napa coupled with trepidations about a looming vacation with the in laws is clouding my ability to come up with the perfect birthday spot!

Chowhounds please help me focus and find an exotic meal for my husband’s birthday.

Thanks,

Ruby Louise (formerly Jennie Sheeks)
