birthday cake suggestions

bjt | Aug 11, 2003 11:32 PM

I need to order a cake for my little guy's birthday party in September and I'm looking for suggestions . . . Unfortunately I don't have time to bake a cake from scratch but that's the kind of flavor I'm looking for. I don't want anything too adult or fancy (no raspberry creme, marzipan filling or fondant icing, etc) so the kids can snarf it up happily but I also want to avoid the scary shortening and powdered sugar frosting you get at supermarket bakeries. I ducked in to Sweet Mandy B's this afternoon (I've heard rave reviews of their cupcakes from several 5 year-olds) but the decorating looked sort of ho-hum/amateurish. That said, I'll totally sacrifice form/aesthetics for homemade flavor . . . I'm a big fan of Bittersweet's tarts (and their cookie decorating) but I've never had any of their cakes. I also have enjoyed the various fancy slices down at Bom Bon in Pilsen but again, never have tried their cake. Oh, and I don't want any goofy themed cake (Elmo, Spiderman and so on) just looking for yummy chocolate frosting with my son's name on it.

Any suggestions/birthday cake tales would be most appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
