When I started out here on Chowhound years ago, one of my main goals was to search out some good "Chicago-style" food here in SoCal...good pizza, italian beef and sausage, etc. There are DOZENS of places, and many have come and gone, but superior and more authentic than any I had ever found was practically in my own backyard...Giorgio's of Chicago in Laguna Niguel. How good was it? So good that I wrote the LA Times suggesting they do a review of it...and they did!...a FULL page one with pics...pretty amazing for a casual place. Alas, for one reason or another, they closed down a few years ago...the only good thing is that it gave me reason to find some more places!
Ok, let's get to the point. This morning I got an E-Mail from the former owner of Giorgio's saying that he and his son are opening a new restaurant in Irvine later this month. It's called Chicago's Best and will feature the above foods and more. Not sure if they will have pizza, though...Giorgio's did some darn good thin crust pizza.
More info as the opening gets closer and you can bet I'll post a review.
