Birrieria & Restaurant Estilo Coalcomán | Castroville

Stopping in Castroville yesterday reminded me to post about my lunch at Birrieria & Restaurant estilo Coalcomán a year ago when it was newly opened. It took over Central Texas BBQ's building. Amazing that the new owners managed to clean all the smoke and soot out of the place.

As the name says, the specialty here is birria. Every day, not just on weekends. For me, chivo (kid goat) is the gold standard, but you can also find beef and lamb versions here. I ordered the Chivo al Horno (roasted kid), $14, after confirming that it would come with a cup of consomé on the side. I was lucky to get some of the costillas (ribs) in my portion that turned out to be the best part. Succulent, smooth and tender as can be, the rib meat was nicely browned and subtly seasoned. The rest of the goat on the plate was a bit on the dry side. The serving came with decent handmade tortillas, chopped onion, cilantro and limes, plus squeeze bottles of red and green salsas.

Chips and salsa were complimentary but only fair. Pass over them and go straight to the birria.
