After all of the posts recently on BBQ in the Twin Cities I had to keep my mission going and check out Big Daddy's on Saturday afternoon. First, let me say that I love the concept of BBQ ribs cooked in a big drum in a parking lot.
Overall it was pretty good, but not in the same league as Pastor Hamilton's. The meat was flavorful, but several of the bones in our half rack were a lot more fat than meat. The sauce was good, but not of the "I need to lick the paper it is so good" variety that I had at Pastor Hamilton's.
The cole slaw was a little bit of a surprise. It had a strong yellow tint. It looked totally unappealing. However, the yellow was from mustard which gave the cole slaw a distinct flavor. The cabbage tasted very fresh. We ended up really liking it.
Overall, my take is that if you are hankering from some ribs on a summer Saturday afternoon in St. Paul it is a good bet, but I am not sure I would drive across the city again for it. I would drive a long way to Pastor Hamilton's ribs, however.
