Big D Burgers, Napa vs. Pick’s, Cloverdale

Following a tip from this board ([BROKEN LINK REMOVED]), a few weeks ago I had lunch at Big D. Ordered a 1/4 lb. bacon cheeseburger ($4.55), small fries (ordered crispy, $1.55), and chocolate shake (small, $2.95) – the classic American lunch is getting pricey! I had asked the order taker whether the shakes were made with real ice cream and he said “yes”. After paying and stepping aside, my heart sank when I spotted the soft serve machines in the back. While a recent rant on these boards complained about chocolate shakes made with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, IMO using soft serve goo is an even greater sin.

The burger was decent, if a bit dry, with fresh garnishes. The fries were golden and crispy outside and creamy inside. The shake was plasticine and was dumped.

I couldn’t help but make the mental comparison to my recent visit to Pick’s in Cloverdale. The 1/4 lb. bacon cheeseburger was juicier and revved up with the signature “red relish”. Fries were not as good. But the best part is the shakes at Pick’s are made with Clover ice cream.
