Biddy O'Malley's in Northvale, NJ

I work down the street from Biddy O'Malley's in Northvale. I used to like Hennessey's for a quick bite, so I was glad to see that Biddy O'Malley's opened. It's pretty busy at night when I leave the office. I decided to go with a few friends at lunch today.

There were only 2 tables, so hopefully lunch will pick up for them. The waiter came quickly to take drink orders, then asked if we were ready to order, which we weren't, and we asked for a few moments to look at the small menu. The waiter went away, and didn't come back for what seemed like 10 minutes, a long time when we were obviously having to return to work. The food also took like what seemed like a long time to be served, considering that there was only one other table, who already had their food, so the kitchen could dedicate themselves to us? One of us got a sandwich special, a grilled chicken with melted cheese and fries, and two of us got the steak sandwich. The bread if from Balthezar Bakery and is delicious. However, the steak sandwich was described as coming on an onion bap, and we had asked the waiter what a bap was, and he said "like a roll". The other woman who ordered the sliced steak asked if the roll was hard, and he said that it usually is because they toast it, but that he could request lightly toasted if she prefers and she said yes. Well, when our sandwiches arrived, they were all on what looked like Italian bread - very white, and no sign of onions. I guess I'll have to try an onion bap another time?

The sliced steak was cooked perfectly. And the sauteed onions were a nice addition. There was also one slice of cheese, maybe provolone? The best are the fries. All 3 sandwiches came with hand-cut fries which looked like they had sea salt on them. Not a soggy one in the bunch! And their homemade ketchup had a sweet hint of maybe pineapple? Maybe orange? Something sweet and fruity. Very good.

Overall, I think this is a nice replacement for Hennessey's. Next time I'll try their burger. (The sliced steak with fries and cole slaw was $10, plain burger platter is $8)

Definitely a place worth trying!
