Bicks Zesty Onion Relish

Jaz Cooks | Nov 17, 201203:35 PM 24
Relish Mustard Seed Onions

Hi guys - when I was in Canada last time, I picked up a jar of Bicks Zesty Onion Relish. It didn't last a week at home. Hubby kept asking for "anything that would go with that relish" for dinner - it was THAT good! I got the list of ingredients off the jar, but I can't find a recipe online that seems to come close. I winged it, and made something passable, but it's not the same.

Onions, sugar, white vinegar, water, spices and seasonings, modified corn starch, dehydrated peppers, salt

It definitely had mustard seeds in it, but I can't figure out the rest. Does anyone have a good copycat recipe for this stuff? Thanks!!

Im not giving up hope yet! if nothing else for the recipe on the back!)
and found this thread much to my disappointment to learn it was discontinued.... why? why would they do such a thing!? It is the BEST topping over cheese and crackers (particularly Ritz and medium cheddar). This years Christmas appetizers just wont be the same.... does ANYONE have the recipe?

I meant to try this recipe, post the results, but circumstances made it impossible.

I checked more than a few recipes and this one seemed closest. The contributor's recipe has pimiento, which I think I wouldn't use. The review I saved used sweet peppers, and I think I'd use a few sweet red peppers. And some crushed red peppers. I tend to play with my food, inspiration-wise.

When I save a recipe, I try to keep the link so there will be no problems, I hope. It is included.

              Walla Walla Onion Relish

By AmandaEmily on July 02, 2007

Prep Time: 2 hrs Total Time: 2 hrs Yield: 8 .5 pints

"An adaptation of the Vidalia Onion Relish to use Walla Wallas and cut down on the amount of sugar used."

              Ingredients
              5 lbs onions
              1/4 cup salt
              1/2 quart apple cider vinegar
              1 teaspoon turmeric
              1 teaspoon pickling spices
              4 ounces chopped pimiento
              1 cup sugar

              Directions
Chop onions finely by hand or in a food processor.
Turn out into a glass bowl and add 1/4 cup of salt and allow to stand for 30 minutes to an hour.
Drain juice from onions and discard.
Put onions in an enameled or stainless steel pot and add vinegar, turmeric, spices (tied into cheese cloth ball), pimentos and sugar. Bring to a boil and allow to cook until onions are transparent.
Pack onions and cooking liquid into canning jars, leaving a 1/2 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles and place lids on jars according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Process jars in a water bath for 10 minutes or adjusted to your altitude.

              Posted review:
Wonderful recipe. So easy to make too. I used to buy Bick's Onion Relish, but not any more...this is far superior. I didn't have the pimientos, so I diced some sweet red, orange and yellow peppers (will add more next time I make this). I ended up with 9 half pints. Probably because my onion pieces were larger. Thanks so much for posting this recipe. This is a keeper.

I'm afraid we have a condiment emergency on our hands.

Zucker Foods of Canada (owners of the Bick's brand) have recently discontinued the Zesty Onion Relish. It is nowhere to be found. I've even called several Superstore locations in the Halifax area (based on your recent post below) and none of them have any. Same thing here in Toronto where I live.

I'm not sure what to do... :)

Sorry Anne. I was so discombobulated at the thought of the product being discontinued that I miswrote the company name. As stated below, it's Smucker Foods and not Zucker Foods.

                Thanks,

I think it may be MADE in the USA, but I don't think it's actually sold there. Our American friend on this thread has only found it in Canada, I believe. I've been watching my local stores for months, including WalMart and Target, except for one. I'll check on Monday, if I can.

Edit: OK, I found a recipe where one of the reviewers prefers it to the Bick's. She uses Walla Wallas, but I figure any sweet onion would do, as I think it's Vidalias that are available right now.I will be trying it make it this week, and will report back. The recipe is at food.com. (Can I post the addy without getting in trouble? Let's try.

I was on an endless search throughout Alberta & BC...but this relish was no where to be found in any grocery store...so I emailed the Bicks company (owned by Smuckers) and below is the reply I received. How disappointing :(

I made some Bread & Butter pickles the other day & gave some to my friends Susie & Rusty. Susie loved B&B pickles. Although neither Rusty nor I particularly like them, we both like the onions better than the pickle. This lead me to think I might make a batch as an onion relish with just or mostly onions & very little cucumber. Maybe none.

I use the recipe in the Blue Book for B&B Pickles which looks very similar to the one you posted although yours seems to have some hot pepper in it. Maybe with a little tinkering it might replicate Bicks.

                Just a thought.
