I've been to the Beverages & More at Santa Monica & LaBrea about a half dozen times since they opened. You can get deals there. The last 2 times, however, I went just after receiving a mailer promoting some specials. The first time 2 weeks ago, I inquired about a French wine that was listed in the mailer. They didn't have it. I got some long story about French distributors and how they deliver when it suits them, etc. This Saturday, I again went right after getting their mailer. This time I asked about an Ectancia Pinot Noir that was a special. Again, they didn't have it. I was told they had sold out. I mentioned just receiving the mailer and was surprised that they'd sold out so quickly. This time I was told they'd been selling the wine for 4-6 weeks. Really? Without previously advertising it as a special? Meanwhile, they suggested a Bouchaine Pinot Noir also on special. I bought some, but I was not impressed. As long as I'm ranting, has anyone else noticed that someone called Wilfred Wong who rates wines (presumably on a Parker scale) seems to rate everything between 86 and 91, regardless of taste? Is this a real person, or is he their Ann Page? OK, rant over.
