I generally make my baked goods from scratch, but I saw a box of this brownie mix today when I was grocery shopping and thought I'd give it a try on a whim. My family used to buy Betty Crocker brownie mixes now and then a few years back when I was still living at home, and they were always rich and chocolatey, so that was what I was expecting.
Imagine my disappointment when the brownies I pulled out of the oven were incredibly sweet, light brown, and fake-tasting! They remind me very strongly of the chocolate flavored protein powders- no real chocolate flavor, just a ton of sugar as well as a chemical aftertaste. I am a person who loves sweet things (I eat frosting by itself) but they're too sweet for me- they make me feel ill. I checked the ingredients after tasting the brownies and discovered that cocoa is listed in the "contains less than 2%
of the following ingredients" section!
So, has anyone else had a similar experience with brownie mixes of the modern day? Is this something happening across the board? I will be checking ingredients more carefully from now on!
More importantly, is there anything I can do to the brownies (dark chocolate frosting, etc) that will make them taste better? I hate to waste anything. Thanks!
