Camellia Grill-Carrollton and St. Charles Ave., Uptown, right on the streetcar line-
oh my god, this is the best diner-type food around. The waiters serve you at an old time counter and cooks make your food on grills where you can watch. Best thing there is the burgers, o-rings and chocolate ice cream freezes. Other excellent choice are Judge's Chicken sandwich, chili cheese omelets and the Doc Brinker.
Figaro-Maple St., near Carrollton, Uptown-
Awesome sort of neuvo-Italian. It always has a ravioli, pizza and soup of the day. The Sherried chicken linguine is my fave, along with the delicious cream of broccoli soup and caesar salad. Entrees come with great homemade breadsticks (not that Boboli garbage) and marinara sauce. You can choose to eat indoor or outside on a covered patio.
Central Grocery-Decatur St., French Quarter
Best muffaletta ever invented. In fact, they invented it. A whole muff feeds two people...we pair our with a bag of Zapp's and a bottle of Barq's rootbeer. Don't be fooled by imitators down the street--this is the real deal.
Jacques Imo's Cafe-Oak St., Uptown
The owner, Jack, drives the most whacked out car imaginable, painted with an alligator. he is also known to walk around the restaurant in his JAMS shorts and chef's hat with a singing Christmas tree, encouraging others to sing along. And they DO! Jack's food is this unbelieveable Southern home cookin'. Favorites include fried chicken, best whipped sweet potatoes ever, cabbage and alligator sausage, shrimp creole, barbequed shrimp. The menu has at least 20-30 entrees a night, which Jack picks based on what he can get fresh that morning. Each meal comes with a small, but delightful salad and a little spicy corn muffin. I had my wedding rehearsal dinner here, and everyone raved about the food and atmosphere.
More good stuff later.......
