so, i was in Tower market over the weekend (sunday) and i am of course poking around the cheese case in the expensive stinky section, sniffing away, and i found this box of cheese. and i sniffed and poked and sniffed some more and tried to pull off the cheese tag to read the box...(that is the one bad thing about tower, they always cover up the french ceese info. with their own sticker)...and finally i just gave up and decided that i COULD rationalize paying 16 dollars for something so stinky and heavenly.
Even the cashier and bagger both commented on the smell when i was paying.
Needless to say, i got it home and let it stand for a while and finally Rob and i dug in and the best way for me to sum it up was Rob's reaction :
"That cheese tastes phenomenally better than it smells! wow."
and it does! personally i like the strong smell, but the taste was totally not expected for the aroma. slightly nutty sweet and tangy with an amazing texture. The exterior under the orange rind was runny and creamy and like a more potent daffinois. The slightly firmer center was reminiscent of a firm goat's milk cheese, but not as tangy. (something reminiscent of St. Marcellin) The rind was what made this cheese exceptional. It had this very sort of dark nutty flavor that balanced against the tang of the milk perfectly. This cheese is amazing and if they still have some at Tower then i suggest you try it.
