Thanks to all who insisted I visit KaDeWe for the ultimate foodie experience in Berlin. I LOVED the food mecca on the 6th floor of this mega-department store. The cheese selection alone is enough to swoon over for hours, but throw in the amazing fish counter, the wurst displays, the crepe bar and cake and chocolate displays and it was just a delightful experience. I actually ate the best weinerschnitzel and spaetzle at the counter there and cannot recommend a visit highly enough.
Other chow highlights:
Cibo Matto -- upscale italian in the Mitte, featuring delicious antipasti and excellent pasta and meat dishes. Very good wine list. Not cheap, but worth it.
Doner kebab -- can be found anywhere, and I'm sure people argue over the best stand. I think Doner is the ultimate street food, and the fluffy pita you find in Berlin is better than most other places I've tried.
Un-named* Austrian restaurant -- across from the Forum hotel in the Mitte. Went there on the recommendation of the concierge in the hotel. I wasn't expecting to be so pleasantly surprised. The fare was light and creative -- lamb, pork (of course) and rumpsteak all cooked perfectly and served with various vegetables -- a treat in Berlin.
* Sorry I don't have the name, but standing with your back to the front entrance of the Forum, the red writing of the restaurant's sign is directly ahead of you.
All in all, a very good chow experience. Thanks again for the help.
