Berkeley - Tangerine Food Bar on Solano – Fresh, Seasonal Food to Go

Tangerine Food Bar may not be the most innovative food in the Bay Area but it does live up to being fresh, seasonal and reasonably priced. Actually it is a pretty good value. There is a dessert and a few cookies from Lola’s on Solano.

This is the menu:

Salmon with rice and 2 sides - $8.99
Chicken of the day and 2 sides - $7.99
Frittata of the Day and 2 sides - $6.99 (Frittata alone $4.99)
Pasta of the day and two sides - $6.99
Three sides - $6.99
Soup of the day - $3.49

The counter has about a dozen sides like cole slaw, fruit salad, dolmas, green salads, various veggies. I had the salmon with broccoli and a green salad with pistachios and fresh mango.

There isn’t anything here that can’t be found at Whole Foods or Safeway, but the quality is a little better. The salmon was cold like you’d find at Whole Foods, but a bit tastier. The mango salad had nice greens and was very fresh. It can be dressed with oil and vinegar. The broccoli was cold in a citrus dressing.

One customer wasn’t sure about the soup of the day, carrot-ginger, and was offered a taste.

Organic coffee is available.

The restaurant opened in December 2001 by Hannie Farrow and her husband Robert Vandongen. The original concept was to specialize in citrus-flavored dishes. I didn’t notice much of that, but there are a number of olive oils, vinegars, jellies and sea salts that are citrus based. They also sell a few pomegranate salad dressings and vinegars.

It seemed to have a big neighborhood following on my visit. Even at a lunch dead time of 1:30 pm, there was a steady stream of customers. Although it is take-out, there are two small tables inside and a bench outside. There is a lovely mural of the wall of a tangerine orchard. I met Robert who is very personable. I may just like the vibes here. There are pictures of the owners babies on the door and wall and Robert knows his customers. Great place if you are dieting. Given the prices, salmon and salads, it will probably be a place I frequent.
