Berkeley: Breakfast at Cafe Fanny

Rod Williams | May 18, 200504:33 PM

I found myself in Berkeley this morning around 9:30, with a healthy appetite and nothing better to do. It was too early to follow Krys's tempting advice to try Gregoire's, so I popped into Cafe Fanny instead.

In no time I was bellied up to the bar with a delicious bowl of cafe au lait, and a few minutes later, I was handed a plate with two slices of Acme's toasted levain (is there anything more yummy?) and two of "Angelo's Poached Eggs" -- actually what I'd call coddled eggs (they were steamed in individual ceramic crocks). They were topped with chopped fresh oregano and drizzled with a little red wine vinegar. Rich eggs, zingy vinegar, fragrant herbs, tangy toast with EVOO -- it was a breakfast party on my palate. Gregoire can wait for another day...
