The steamed frank is literally a foot long and is cradled in a lightly-toasted bun that seems of the artisan persuasion.
It is not the supermarket squishy balloon bread type but is a nice match for the dog in terms of heft and size. It is not too chewy yet substantial enough to hold dog with condiments. A slight criticism is that it has a potato bread-like taste and calls attention to itself and distracts slightly from the focus on the frank.
The dog has no casing for snap, but the spicing is nice with a mild but distinct garlic note that works and is very tasty. Some Coscos sell Sinai franks. The sauerkraut was fine but was room temperature rather than warm.
The red velvet cupcakes are very festive looking. The lemony cream cheese frosting has pastel sprinkles. The cupcake is a shocking bright cherry red … it doesn’t seem to have the cocoa that gives a darker tint to most red velvet cake. It was good but it didn’t do anything to answer my question of why red velvet cake is popular outside of looks. The quest continues.
I like Bette’s mini-cupcakes which are actually the size of a normal cupcake. The pink icing tasted … pink … like I imagine that color should taste … sugary like the filling in an oreo but light. The cake had a nice crumb. It is a decent cupcake.
They had some black and white cookies one day but I didn’t try them.
In the days I frequented Fourth Street I rarely bought anything except the delicious cheese puffs because my destination was always the diner next door.
I see they have the great fruit salad that the diner serves. Bette’s is one of the few places that makes excellent seasonal fruit salad worth ordering. It was a favorite of mine at the diner.
There have been favorable reports about the Cubanos. How are the tacos? I’ve never had the pizza either … any good?
I like The Cheeseboard scones better so I only bought a scone here once. How are the muffins? Haven’t tried the doughnut muffin either.
The chocolate-espresso covered twinkies looked good as did the lemon bars. How do they compare to Bakesale Bettie’s lemon bars?
They seem to do seasonal stuff. They had mini cheese hamantaschen for Purim. At one time the red velvet cupcakes were only for Valentine’s Day. I’ve seen them on three recent visits.
So what else is good here? Anything to avoid?
This great website that just collects pictures of cupcakes has some photos of Bette’s mini cupcakes and a chocolate kiss cupcake that looks amazing. Haven’t seen that one though.
