On Saturday I was heading over 47th St. in the direction of the theater, when I realized I was early (as usual) and cold. Up ahead beckoned Berger's deli. I thought a cup of hot tea would be good. This place in the center of the diamond district, (44 W. 47th) was bustling with customers. I sat at the counter and a waiter passed a bowl of matzo ball soup right under my nose, so I ordered some. Good broth (found a tiny bite of meat in it and I think it was turkey) and not a large bowl. The matzo ball, though, was one of the best I've had. It was light and finely grained. It wasn't what I'd call a bargain for a smallish bowl of soup, but it sure hit the spot! I asked for rye bread with it, and it came as a bread and butter sandwich sliced in half. Great for dunking in the soup. I'll go to the theater even earlier next time, and try something else. I saw lots of good looking stuff go by.
