Another check-in from the "Rocky Mount roving reporter."
I was having a really bad morning and was hungry for breakfast (a rare occurance), so I decided to try Benvenue Grill. I had something specific in mind - a ham & egg biscuit.
The grill is located in a house-shaped building with slightly worn white paint. It has a banging screen door, always a good sign. My first surprise was that this is not a convenience store with a grill in it (the source of other good breakfasts at other times), but an honest-to-god restaurant with wooden tables. Cute cafe curtains with fruit on them, a green paint trim, really very comfortable, although I had to get takeout, being pressed for time.
A short menu which included various biscuit sandwiches and a 2 eggs plus meat special. On another, less stressful occasion I will try the fatback & egg, which is the only thing I have never seen elsewhere, and also tenderloin (which is another personal favorite).
The service was friendly and obviously knew the other customers. The cook/chef moved efficiently, and everything was cooked to order except the biscuit. The food was everything I hoped for. A flaky, square biscuit with just the right amount of crunch on the outside. The ham was superb and as tender as country ham ever is, with the ring of fat left around the edge, to my delight. The egg was just greasy enough from the pork fat on the grill (to clarify, this is technically a griddle - think diner). I was in heaven.
The lunch menu is also small but servicable. I would like to try the bologna burger, and also navy beans. I am a sucker for the unusual, but someday I might try a burger there too. All for the sake of science, of course . And trying the tea (iced sweet tea, to clarify for those non-Southerners) will also be a must. I seldom drink it with breakfast.
Benvenue Grill is located at 1621 Benvenue Rd. in Rocky Mount.
