bellini grill

Went to Bellini (220 South 16th Street) Sunday night with my whole family (following my parents visit to the opera) and had a nice (albeit slow) dinner. We were going to go to Bronzino but the man who answered the phone was ungodly rude and turned me off to the place entirely (I had been once food was good, service was terrible).

Place was packed at 6pm (families, couples, kids, the whole works) and only ONE waitress (apparently the other called out). We ordered 3 apps (there were 6 of us): tomato bruscetta, anchovy bruscetta (basically the tomato with a fresh anchovy filet on top), and an order of fried calamari. 4 pieces each on the bruscetta and a nice pile of lightly fried (a little salty though) calamari, enough for us all to have a taste.

Main dishes were: balsamic chicken (hubby had this one so I got to try, really excellent), 2 got veal and crabmeat, 1 veal scaloppini, 1 braciole (I snagged a piece from my sister, also really good) and I got the zuppe de pesce (assortment of salmon, mussels, clams, shrimp, calamari and a few things I’m forgetting – a lot of seafood, on linguini with a spicy tomato sauce – yum!). Everyone was really happy with their meal, my only observation was that the veal dishes looked a little small, but everything else was ample.

Split 2 tiramisu and a cannoli for desert. they were all above average (not great, but better than most).

Service was very slow because of the lack of help, we had to get our waitress’ attention at least ½ dozen times. There was a bus girl and boy “helping out” but they spoke no english. It was a bit of a struggle getting water filled, wine opened etc…, the waitress was nice enough but she was overwhelmed by the crowd.

Total before tip was 154 for 6 people, byob. overall: the food was good (I liked it better than viola and la baia but not as much as matyson’s as a point of reference from center city byob’s) price was right, and hopefully they have more help on most nights. This was my 3rd time there and I think the dishes have improved since my first visit in September. I’m sure we’ll be back given it’s convenient location.
