My first experience with Belleville was dinner many months ago, probably not too long after they first opened. I had a beef bourguignon that was pretty mediocre and figured I'd never return. But lots of people on this board praise it, so the other day when I was wandering around the Slope looking for lunch, I decided to give it another go. What a mistake.
The tuna confit pressed sandwich with frites and greens on the side looked beautiful. But the sandwich tasted like sand, the mushy frites had little potato flavor, and the greens had a dressing that was nearly all vinegar. The coup de grace was the hands-down worst cappucino I've ever had, like badly brewed Folgers with wispy foam on top. I gagged down a couple of sips and escaped, happy to pay my $14 and never return.
