I had been here before in ignorance and ate an entirely forgettable American-Chinese lunch (you know, beef with broccoli, cup of soup, chicken fingers type of thing).
But thanks to your raves this has been on my to-try list. Yesterday I finally got there.
Was so pleased to find many faves from Shangri-La!
tip: ASK FOR THE (PINK) CHINESE MENU! They also have specials on the whiteboard as you enter.
We ordered the Shanghai cabbage and black mushroom (aka Chinese vegetable and black mushroom -- baby bok choi and whole shiitake caps, here stewed in a dark, thickish sauce with a touch of minced scallion -- not heavy and very flavorful. Actually like it better than Shangri-La's version (in chicken broth, very delicate), though not arrayed as prettily.
We also got Shredded pork and chive with preserved tofu. Here, it is not hot at all (can be quite hot at S-La with the chiles), but the 5 spice powder really shines through.
The waitress was just delighted with us for ordering "real" food.
