The beer selection in Manhattan sucks! However, I ventured into Pioneer Supermarket on the Upper West Side and found what is by far the largest selection of beer that I've come across. Random beers pop-up almost weekly.
Perhaps more surprising is that they had bottles of a Deschutes Porter from Bend, Oregon. I have a friend who works as a brewer there and had told me they don't distribute beyond the Pacific Northwest and Rockies. It turns out Deschutes thinks the beer was sent sometime in the summer of 2001 through Brooklyn Brewery in conjunction with the Craft Brewer's Guild, which no longer exists. The folks at Pioneer haven't been much help.
Does anyone know how Pioneer gets their beer, and perhaps other stores in Manhattan with weird distribution channels?
