we finally stopped at the oft-reviewed Tea Garden for lunch today. there was only one other customer when we showed up at 11:40, but within 5 minutes the place was mobbed with students from the Academy of Art, filling the little place with customers spilling out the door and curious onlookers stopping to gawk.
we both had the niou ro mien(beef noodle soup). I also had the Lemon Green Tea with Honey and my friend had the Green Bean(Mung bean) with Tapioca
I agree with previous posters that the beef was the highlight of the niou ro mien, the briskets and various cuts were really well done and the tendons were quite tender. The flavor was okay - for me it wasn't a particularly striking/inviting flavor, but it wasn't terrible either.
the noodles we really wished we could change-my friend and I joked that we would BYONoodles next time because we felt one could easily buy dried noodles from Chinese markets that are more al dente.
my lemony green tea with honey was excellent - for a brief moment I thought I was sipping the lemony concoction under the sun in Taipei.
my friend's mung bean with Tapioca was interesting - we could tell the Mung Bean mix was freshly prepared, but it had an interesting aftertaste of coffee(?)
has anyone else tried other items on their drink menu? imho they were much better than the average Q-cup or Fantasia drinks, I'm curious to find what else is good
btw, the owners displayed previous Chowhound reviews prominently next to the entrance.
