So after a wonderful beef at Buona's last week, I decided to try another location: Jay's at Mt. Prospect Road and Golf in Mount Prospect.
I can't say I'm thrilled. I think the earlier beef analysis had reported their beef as being "beefy" and I can agree with that: it had a basic roast beef with gravy flavor (although the jus wasn't any thicker than anybody else's). It was less greasy than Buona's (a plus), and had thicker, larger slices of beef (also a plus), bordering on tough (an obvious minus).
The giardiniera was very different from the usual stuff that, even if homemade, resembles bottled. Jay's was coarsely sliced celery and peppers with flakes of red peppers. It's tasty, but not as much variety as other places, lacking the carrots, cauliflower florets and olives (mmm). And when they charge extra for it? A big minus.
So, I can't say that this is tops on my list. I've got a few more nearby places to try in the near future, but I probably won't do more than one a week.
