Bed-Stuy Roti

Brooklyn Boy | Oct 4, 2003 10:50 PM

Today my wife and I, acting on a tip from a co-worker, tried a new roti place in Bed-Stuy. The official name of the place is "Two Scoops Ice Cream and Bakery Corp."
My co-worker said that it had been an ice cream parlor that flopped and was then revived with the original offerings, plus some Caribbean fare. My wife and I sampled chicken and vegetable rotis, along with some desserts and drinks. The roti skin was passable, but the filling was bland and contained too many potatoes. Plus, the guy working the counter neglected to put in the hot sauce (even though I had requested it), which made it even worse. The desserts were a bit better, though. We tried a coconut slice, which resembled a currant roll, and a piece of red belly cake, which tasted like a combination of bread and cake and was flavored with coconut flakes dyed red. The highlight of the meal was the homemade mauby, which had a strong, bitter taste. All in all, this place was a disappointment. Too bad, as my wife and I have been saving to buy a co-op and rarely get to eat out these days, so we had been looking forward to having a good roti. Perhaps we caught them on a bad day.

If anyone would like to try Two Scoops, it's located at 1745 Fulton Street, at Utica Avenue. The A or C trains will take you right there, as will the #25 bus.

Alas, the search continues for a roti better than Singh's...
