At the risk of sounding like a pompous jerk, I have to ask the question -- do you consider Beckta excellent with respect to its location (Ottawa), or would you consider it to be universally excellent?
The reason I ask is because while I found it very good, especially the service, I did not think it was head-and-shoulders above other very good restaurants in other places. Judging by the rave reviews on this site, however, I am wondering if perhaps I simply did not order the most outstanding dishes??
I have lived in Chicago, London (UK) and now Ottawa... I can think of quite a few better places in either former city, but perhaps not in Ottawa proper.
I found the decor to be comfortable, but standard. The service was excellent. The food was very good, but nothing ingenious. And the wine list, while superior in composition, was not reasonably priced, in my opinion -- I have had some of the same wines elsewhere, for less. But perhaps that is the result of exorbitant liquor taxes in Ontario.
Anyway, since I plan to return, if there is something on the menu at Beckta that floored you, please share so I can give it a try. I have no complaints, but I feel that the God-like status granted to this place somehow eludes me. As I said, perhaps I did not make the right choices.
