Another potential recession hedge manuever......Should I spend $4.99 for 34.5 ounces of this or pay the xtra $2-3 for Maxwell House
Hi. I just tried my first cup this morning, and found your post after googling the brand after I had my first taste. I will have to tell you that you really should save the extra $$ and go back to Aldi if you haven't already! Personally, I don't love Maxwell House, but I have bought Folgers for years and the Beaumont is definitely worth the $3.00 savings (for me, anyway.) Have a great weekend :)
I stock up on this when I visit my grandma... she is lucky enough to have Aldi less than 5 minutes from her!
The decaf is not bad either, I keep some for when I want coffee with dessert. It's comparable to Folgers. Def worth the price. Aldi's version of Fiber One bars is also good. Bet if you post/search on the Chains board you will find lots of Aldi lovers there who can guide you through all the great stuff there.
I have used (at Aldi's) Beaumont whole bean coffee that I grind at home for about a year. I buy the Java Jig reusable K-Cups from Walmart and fill them with fresh ground Beaumont beans. I have used Folgers drip grind for over 60 years (I am 72) and I find (for me at least) that the Beaumont Donut Store Blend is the best coffee that I have ever used including your gourmet coffee's. hattenw2@gmail.com
Yes, I;m running out to Aldi's tomorrow!!!!!! I was at the grocery store today and the Price of coffee has soared- $8.99- $9.49 for your name brands standard 34 oz container...what's up with that??
And a major BOO to FOLGER'S for shrinking the size of their containers on most varieties from 34.5 ounces to 27.5 or thereabouts
OMG! The absolute best. I've been drinking this for over a half of year now since my son who's always on a budget turned me on to Aldi "Period". I have to say most everything at Aldi is as great as any other brand, if not better, i.e., canned soup, TP, Chips, etc. And the coffee, "Forget About It. Honestly, I like it better than the same size bag I used to buy from Starbucks. I thinks its actually better. Anyone agree?
I realize that this link is really old, but I TOTALLY agree with you, paulispumponti! I have tried MANY coffees in my day (Starbucks, TONS of "exotic blends" at Costco, Folgers, organic blends, etc.). I have to say, Aldi's Beaumont Donut Store Blend coffee is THE BEST I've ever had. I have never looked forward to my morning coffee as much as I do with this. It's SO GOOD!
I LOVE this coffee..... it IS better than Starbucks....and so much more economical. I buy the whole beans and use them in my Gaggia machine.
We can't decide if it's the coffee or the machine.... LOL
I didn't like the Beaumont the first time I made it. I was used to Folger's. I still had some Folger's left, so I started adding more and more Beaumont everyday. Yes, I tapered off Folger's! Anyway, I now save money by buying coffee at Aldi. Remember, if you don't like something they sell you, they'll refund your money AND replace the product.
The Beaumont coffee at Aldi is about the same as supermarket coffee, not much better, nor much worse. It is considerably cheaper however.
Just wanted to put in a plug for Aldi's German Roast coffee. We used to live in Germany and I would swear that this is the same as Dallmayr coffee, which is significantly more expensive to purchase in the US. It has been our go-to coffee since moving back from Munich and it is a quality coffee product for everyday. I've never tried the Beaumont because the German Roast is so good.
I have to agree my sister sent me the Dallmayr and the German roasted coffee at Aldi is delicious and it tastes the same. Its $4.99 a bag at Aldi and its so worth it. I look forward to that cup of joe every day. The Dallmayr is Awesome too they taste similar. Maybe its the same coffee but sold under Aldi? hmmm
I like the Dallmayr coffee too....you can find it occasionally in Marshall, TJ Maxx or Homegoods. I am very impressed with Aldi's coffee. I don't know how true it is but I heard that makers of Aldi's coffee is the same as Starbucks. Either way the price of Aldi's coffee is most definitely the better deal for the taste.
Everyone should remember that it's IMPOSSIBLE to lose testing an ALDI product. They'll refund the money AND give you a replacement. You can always donate the nonperishable item to a food bank. Someone will like it. In the case of coffee, try my trick. I tapered off Folger's by blending that with the Aldi coffee. Or, you might like to do half and half. Either way, you'll save money.
I'm three years late in answering, but just in case anyone stumbles upon this, I'd say you'd be a fool to pay more for Maxwell House. (And if you're going to be a coffee snob...really, Maxwell House?!) Read the ingredients. I'll wager they are both "100% pure Arabica beans". And while on the subject., the beans at Aldi labeled "Morning Blend" and "Donut Store Blend" are exactly the same. I've had both and cannot taste the difference. Their labels have exactly the same text.
We love Beaumont's Morning Roast. After years of going through "phases" liking Coffee Fool, Starbucks, Seattle's Best (pre-merger) and Tully's, we tried "lowly" Beaumont coffee from Aldi and we haven't looked back. We hand grind with a hand built Camano Coffee Mill from Red Rooster Trading Company. Adjusting this conical burr mill to a very coarse grind and using filtered water and double walled Bodum stainless steel french press (6 scoops of coarse ground coffee for 36 ounces of water and 4 minutes brew time) produces our ideal cup.
I have read almost all the coffee-related threads on Chowhound, and I saved this thread to my profile with the idea that one day I would have to try this inexpensive coffee that most posters said was reasonably good. I am sipping my first cup right now. When I pulled open the bag of whole bean Beaumont Morning Roast (a task in itself- finally got the scissors), I smelled really nothing much. I am used to that "moment" of opening a new bag of Dunkin Donuts whole beans and being hit with an incredible aroma. Beaumont.... nothin'.
Now, I gotta tell ya, this cup of coffee is more of the same. Nothin'. I can taste my usual sweetner, but not much coffee. I will tinker with maybe an extra Tablespoon of Beaumont tomorrow, and use the entire bag one way or another (maybe a spoonful to extend the Dunkin beans, as a compromise for a few mornings...).
[My favorite extenders to mix in with my Dunkin Donuts whole beans are either ground Folgers Classic Roast Medium or 8 O'Clock 100% Columbian beans. No new contenders this morning.]
It's hard for me to imagine why anyone would buy / drink Maxwell House. This thread has me wanting to try the Aldie brand. We've had such unexpected, good luck with most Aldie products that it's worth a try. Our current preference is New England Coffee (DD perhaps second) which is typically available as a sale item at Stop & Shop around here every few weeks.
As for DD, ever notice how it's typically about the same price at the grocer vs. the store, except the DD stores sell 16 oz bags vs. 12 oz at the grocer?
I like most of the blends of coffee in the 12 ounce foil bags Aldi's carries. I just purchased the classic medium roast ground coffee that is fair trade certified. I was very pleased with the taste!
Interesting that this thread has found new life. My experience with Aldi's coffee, as I posted above, was even worse than the description as "lousy" or "...bad..." It just was absolutely tasteless.
[HillJ: your post in 2009 was that Aldi's "Dunkin Donutish coffee" was "excellent." Your new comment about the crap shoot tells me that it can be excellent or lousy. But I'm not going back to roll the dice or otherwise see if Aldi's "tasteless" has come any closer to "excellent." There are so many other coffees on the market (elsewhere) that suit me as close to excellent.]
Aldi's sells different styles of coffee and the pre ground is not consistent. At the time 2009 I did prefer the DD over the standard Beaumont but neither compare to whole bean, well produced beans which I buy all the time. So no argument from me.
I've been known to be wrong, change my mind, and experience inconsistent results from every brand-even whole bean.
A four year gap btwn comments, sure different opinion.
Coupled with the actual preference for how we each enjoy our coffee, maybe a general recommendation is all we can offer.
I've been buying Trader Joe's medium roast beans and a new Mocha Java blend call Variety (also bean) from a nearby farmer's market of late. I prefer to drink coffee black, no sugar. I like the taste of coffee without covering it up with extras (maybe the occasional vanilla bean but that's about it). Unless I'm drinking coffee iced, then I really like it light.
How do you enjoy your coffee?
"Cream" and Splenda for me, thanks. Very ocasionally a small dash of cinnamon. Actually, my "cream" is usually Evaporated milk, but I have come to find out our guests don't think its a treat. at all. We always have the powdered stuff on hand. I think the amounts of extras for me would be very moderate.
I was blown away that my experiment with the Aldi's just left me tasting the Splenda and evap. I tinkered with those to try to coax the coffee into being the more prominant taste, but it wasn't to be.
I make it double strength, stir in flavored mocha sauce (white or dark chocolate), then pour over ice for my own iced mocha. The OP wanted to know how it compared to Maxwell House, so I couldn't imagine her/him finding fault with Beaumont. I live with someone who has no concept of how ridiculous it is to own a Cuisinart grinder and then jus buy the cheapest beans you can find, but I make do with what's on hand. Were it solel up to me, it would be the beans from the specialty shop down the street, which sells Fair Trade beans affordably in bulk. (T.Joe's price not bad either.) But noooooo, not convenient enough for Mr. CAMF. (Guess the acronym.)
Remember the Double Guarantee. If you don't like the product, take it back. Aldi will give you a replacement AND your money. You could donate the new can to a food pantry. I adjusted to Aldi coffee in a few days by lessening the amount of Folger's I put into the filter. It was painless. If I were expecting company, I might want to use something I know the guests would like.
Thanks, John E! I have started making cold brewed coffee this summer and I agree about the nuances being lessened. That has been my experience too. So I will use good ol' run-of-the -mill Kirkland or generic coffee for cold brew and then return to my favorite blend of chicory and coffee for regular brewing during the cooler months. :-)
This is only in regard to their whole bean coffee; they had 2; one called something like "Morning Roast" and the other is something like "Donut Store Blend".
Both are described as "100% Arabica" and "Medium Roast".
Both came in metallic bags with air locks.
I tested them side by side, ground them within minutes of each other. The grounds are a medium brown. Not as dark as my usual (Joe Van Gogh Sunrise blend), and used a French press to make 2 pots. First one went in a Thermos. Both steeped 4 minutes.
My wife and I tested them blind (identified by an A or B taped to the bottom of the mug) side by side. The results? We both picked the Donut Shop Blend as being the better of the two, but we agreed it would extremely difficult to tell them apart. They could very well be the exact same beans in different bags. Same price.
The coffee was nothing spectacular, but it was good. I will absolutely drink it as an everyday coffee. Price was less than half that of the boutique stuff and very drinkable. Once we finished the taste test I combined both in the thermos, added a bit of salt and a little sugar and drank it the rest of the day. Very pleased.
Coffee geeks will always say it is brown garbage. However, for those on a budget Beaumont WHOLE BEAN is a great way to go.
Anything pre-ground from any store is never that good after the second you open the package. So my advice would be to invest $25 in a blade grinder (or more in a nice burr grinder if you are an avid coffee drinker) and buy the whole bean Donut Shop blend. It is a perfectly fine cup of coffee for everyday drinking, suitable for all palettes. It's a medium roast and as the name implies, is similar to Dunkin Donuts whole bean coffee.
Buy your favorite specialty coffee when it's on sale or for special occasions but this coffee will save you mucho in the long run.
Used to buy Aldi's whole bean Donut Store Blend by Beaumont. I have been drinking coffee for 50 yrs and this was the best! Now Aldi's has switched producers and now Donut Store Blend is made by Barissimo, NOT the same, not the same taste or quality....I've noticed recently that Aldi's has been changing manufacturers on many of their products... all are inferior. I suspect Aldi's, in trying to be competitive, by sacrificing quality for price....not the same Aldi's of years ago....too bad, I am no longer a loyal customer! I have returned many products for refund.
I'm not even an avid coffee drinker, but found myself having a cup sometimes when tired in the morning. I tried Beaumont coffee from Aldi's and loved the taste! I returned for more several times and then around Thanksgiving...I ran to Aldi's for my Beaumont fix only to find that they do not sell it anymore! That's how I ended up here on line looking for it!
I guess thanks to this revelation, the coffee I have enjoyed both price and taste from aldi's for at least 3 years is no longer available. I have checked three stores and not a jar on the shelf. I guess they are going to hold it out for a while and re-introduce it back into their system at a higher price.
Remember, Aldi has the double guarantee. You can get your money back AND they'll give you another package of coffee, in case something was wrong with the first one. You can always refuse the extra, or give it to a food bank.
I never tried the doughnut store kind. I don't drink that much coffee. I see Folger's, my fave, on sale at good prices. So, I can buy that, or mix Folger's with the Aldi. That stretches the money a bit.
I tried a small can of Beaumont coffee from Aldi's and found it weak flavored and it had an odd slightly out-of-place chemical taste. I gave it a try on three different occasions before emptying the remainder of the can into my backyard garden. Folders or Maxwell House is better, and Starbucks better yet. However, the Starbucks CEO pays himself a salary of 21.5 million, which is obscene. Average pay for a Starbucks barista is only $8.79 per hour. Boo for Starbucks too.
Yes I love the Beaumont Hazelnut flavor ground coffee. I would buy 6 bags at a time. Well Aldi has changed to a different distributor and it just doesn't taste the same as the Bueaumont brand. Are they not able to get that brand anymore? I bought this because the taste was there and the value was just right for me. Let's get back the Beaumont brand OK.
I only buy whole bean coffee and use my hario grinder and bodum french press, no cream, no sugar.
I used to buy the Costa Rican whole bean coffee from Aldi almost exclusively, the newer blends are not bad, but they don't work that well for a french press being a lighter roast and all.
I have to say Aldi's Morning Roast is actually quite good. The Donut Blend is not terrible but not really above your average Walmart whole bean coffee. Both blends are priced much lower than any comparable whole bean coffee I've seen.
I have bought Morning Roast quite a bit because the price just can't be beat.
Aldi has two special coffees and I decided to give them a try,
The first is Honduran and the second is a Peruvian, both supposedly fair trade. I have to say, both are a class above the Morning Roast and probably better than the older Costa Rican beans (at least using a french press) and can actually rival the taste of some local coffee shop beans at a much lower price. I personally prefer the Peruvian, but they are both quite good.
After trying them, I went ahead and bought 6 bags as they are a "as supplies last" item and may not return.
I don't really know why, but I am very partial to instant coffee. My favorite, by far, is a brand called "Nescafe". It's a pretty cheap brand and I absolutely LOVE it!!! They sell Nescafe at Aldi, also, but one day a few weeks back, they were out of it. I didn't want to stop at any other store and I REALLY have to have coffee, so I bought a jar of the Beaumont instant coffee. The whole time I was shopping, I was telling myself to put it back and stop to get the Nescafe somewhere else because I thought, for sure, that I would totally hate it!!! But I bought it anyhow and when I got home, I made myself a cup. I really didn't hate it LOL....... It reminded me of Folgers, honestly. I was quite shocked that I liked it because I am usually a die-hard Nescafe fan. It's worth it to give it a try...... especially if you're usually a Folgers fan!!
I know this is a super old post, but I see some newer comments so I will post anyways. My whole family loves the Beaumont coffee. We get the Classic Roast at only 5.49. We used to be just Folgers drinkers, with the occasional McCafe and DD brand. We haven't even touched them other brands since using Beaumont coffee. The entire family just loves it. Especially my 85 year old grandmother who is very picky on her coffee!
If you like Folgers or Maxwell House, you'll undoubtedly be fine with this coffee. Personally, I think it has all the flavor and richness of ground sawdust. But I think the same of Folgers and Maxwell House, though Folgers is more tolerable. Personally, I like McCafe, Dunkin Donuts, Seattle's Best, and Gevalia coffees with my overall, hands-down favorite being Douwe Egberts (which is unfortunately impossible to find in the States). Starbucks is just too strong for me, so I'll only drink Frappucinos or Mochas from their brand. I mention this so any reader/reviewer can get a better idea of whether or not you'd like Aldi's coffee as a "regular cup-of-Joe" coffee consumer. We all have different tastes in what we define as "good coffee" and if your tastes are similar to mine, in terms of your favorite coffees, you probably won't like Aldi's coffee. But I've also found with coffee, like drinking diet soda, our taste buds acclimate to our regular choices of beverages. If you drink diet soda long enough, your taste buds will change, and you'll consider regular soda way too sweet. So, if you're trying to save money... maybe give it a week or two on Aldi's coffee and you could end-up not wanting any other brand.
Wanted to try a new coffee since we are tying to cut grocery spending cost and read these comments and tried Beaumont a few min ago and love the taste. We found another great deal at Aldi's and big savings with plain yogurt. I used Fage for years and the price was usually around $7 and was able to cut the cost in half after switching to Aldi's Friendly Farms Plain Yogurt.. so delicious and flavor is very similar to Fage but better in my opinion.
I have been drinking Beaumont coffee for about 20 years now. I've tried all the so-called major brands and always come back to Beaumont. I've always wondered who is actually making it for ALDI. The secret with this coffee is don't make it too strong. It has a very smooth flavor that can't be beat in my opinion.
