Beaujolais nouveau - surprisingly good this year

For what it's worth, I recently had some of this year's Baujolais Nouveau and it was surprisingly tasty. I usually avoid it completely as a species of hype that's much more about marketing than about wine.

In this case I had it blind, it was handed to me by a waiter at a reception and I had no idea what I was drinking till I'd finished the glass and was able to make my way to the bar. Damn if it didn't taste like real wine rather than the grape-ade that nouveau usually resembles. A bit of tannin to support it, nice fruit right up front (of course) and a bit of black pepper to give it some additional interest. A perfect party wine.
