...in a good way.
wanted to report back on the evolution of beast on vanderbilt and st marks. have been an enthusiastic supporter since they opened/i gained a new venue for sipping a cocktail and enjoying an interesting snack w/o having to lose my prking space.
have always dug the vibe and the bartenders -- top notch with the mixing, the wine, and the draft selections!!!!!!!!!!!!
the menu, imho, has always struggled a little. now, tho, i am thinking it is really congealing.
my recs and those of my beef- and bird-eating friends:
the beast burger and the chicken are fantastic. the burger is a big tasty mess o'meat. good quality. ask for extra homemade ketchup. i've been told by referents that the chix is flavorful. the skirt steak with interesting accompaniments, new on the menu, has also won kudos (for me) among the people i've sent.
i have personally always loved the bacalao; the shrimp and peppers; the roasted veggies; and the escarole. the new smoked trout salad, which i had tonight, was a very generous portion and yummy, if a bit underdressed, which i appreciate, but others may not. mussels are good -- a lighter brew (not as buttery or creamy) than most in this area. crabcakes are also a good choice. i am going to have to try them again before offically weighing in. at first sampling, something made me wish they were a little *louder.*
all in all, i am really enjoying this place and grooving on how earnestly they approach their mission.
