I live about 4 blocks away from this newly opened Japanese bakery that serves mainly special cream puffs, so I was dying to go when it opened. I had heard about beard papa because of my friends in Asia. I finally had a chance to go today, considering the line wasn't as long as it usually was. There were about 9 people in front of me, which was pretty good because everytime I had passed by before, there were at least 20 in line. They were handing out flyers on the street which gave a description of the cream puffs and what makes them different from all others. First, the crust of the puff consists of 2 layers, a traditional choux pastry makes up the interior layer, and the outside is a crunchier pie crust coating. however, the puffs look very much like regular cream puffs. The cream filling is made fresh several times a day and comes in about 4 flavors including green tea, and royal milk tea (a traditional black tea with milk flavor). However, during the first few days it's been opened they have only had the vanilla flavor available. I assume they will start adding the new flavors soon. They also serve some other desserts such as mango shaved ice, mango pudding, and cheesecake just to name a few, but I think the main draw would be the cream puffs. Just as I was about to reach the counter, they started giving out free samples. I immediately reached for one. It was delicious. The pastry is nicely crisp and light. Kind of flaky and not as soggy or dense as a regular puff. The cream inside is not as eggy as a pastry cream but it is lightened with fresh cream and has vanilla bean in it. I ended up buying 3 of them to go, eating one on the road and then giving the rest to a friend because I knew I'd be back really soon (like tommorow!!). My friend ate them both one right after the other. He was hooked as well!
The cream puffs are 1.25 for one vanilla puff. The other flavors will run 1.45. prices don't include tax.
I hope that the lines during the week won't be so bad...
