Anyone who's spent much time is this resort and winery town in Central Washington probably already knows that grocery and dry goods shopping there isn't fulfilling or enlightening. Yes, there's a Safeway (and now a Walmart), and a couple of independent grocery stores in DT Chelan and nearby Manson. But there's never been anywhere to go to find specialty foods and ingredients. If you wanted, e.g., Madagascar pepper, or Merula EVOO, you better have brought it with you. Same with pastas, mustards, vinegars, oils, on and on.

So imagine my elated surprise to find, on the main drag DT , a completely new-to-me store with a wide and deep selection of top-quality and well-curated ingredients, dry goods, condiments, wines, oils, organic produce, local meats, cocktail bitters, ad astra. This isn't smalltown food Co-op stuff, either. It's world-class curated, the likes of which you would find at G. Detou in Paris or DeLaurenti in Seattle. And on a square foot:population ratio, Bear Foods punches like a bantam winning in middle heavyweight; it's actually a large store.

This uptick into culinary civility is a long-overdue rite of passage for Chelan. All the quality wines from this AVA now have something on the same levels to cook and taste with!
