bear cafe/beard cafe open?

back in the day (late 90s), i used to always hear about this casual yet relatively obscure cafe/coffeehouse in little italy called beard cafe. it was located on elizabeth st btwn broome/grand sts. i had always wanted to go there, but never quite made it for whatever reason.

then i came across the following article recently:

it says that the place formerly known as "beard cafe" had become "bear cafe" and was now a speakeasy-style dive bar catering to a diverse crowd, with a free karaoke machine and barbecue on sundays.

sounds pretty cool, i thought.

as i was in the area earlier today, i decided to check this place out. but try as i might, i could NOT find it. i had the address handy with me, but all i could see was an chinese nail salon at that spot.

does anyone know what the deal with this place is? did it close down immediately after it opened? was the linked article above a complete joke? is the address wrong?
